[...] A couple of posts back I was talking about how pointless man-made disasters are, especially in the face of natural disasters. Just 2 months ago China was hit by an earthquake, and this month Southern China has been suffering what the BBC called “some of the worst storms in decades“. Yesterday my former flatmate informed me that at 7:05am and 8:05am, bombs went off on buses in Kunming. The current figures are 2 dead and 14 injured. Anything like this that happens is bad enough, but you’d think after so much unavoidable heartache after the earthquake and floods, people would be in a reflective, united mood and not want to contribute more. More news here. [...]

Haha, that's a great story! Ah, the power of love (or lust, or desperation, but I like to think it was love).

Ho ho! I saw a documetary about prisons the other day and in it there was a couple of inmates of interest. One was a a man put in jail for various crimes he commited as a Neo Nazi but now in prison he has decided to hook up with a male Jew!

Just goes to show it is all pretty silly in the end!

(Not too relevant I know but what the heck...)

Oooh diamond zongzi sounds nice. I didn't see any dragon boat races or anything, sadly. I was going to go and see the Olympic flame pass through Kunming today, but they changed the route so it's not coming through the city and more. Too bad.

I went to the Dragon Boat race in Taipei today! But, it took me much longer to get there than I thought, so the actual competition races were over, and instead I watched the silly races, which was a competition for which team could row the dragon boat in the silliest costumes. I should have taken more pictures.

Also they gave away free water, sportdrink and "diamond" zongzi (a dessert zongzi with clear sticky rice and a red bean filling). yum.

The history of the holdiay is kind of interesting. It appears that several ancient holidays involving dragon gods and river gods were conflated into one.

The only guarenteed way to get a good price is to go with a Chinese person. However here are some tips:
--don't mention a price, just say "Make it cheaper," over and over.
--don't look too eager, obv. but do look interested; otherwise they may think you are wasting their time
--once you've said "make it cheaper" a few times, then say a price significantly cheaper than their lowest. and bargain up from there.

The bottom line is that as an outsider, you're not going to get the very best prices. But that's really not so bad. Look at it this way: are you happy with the price you paid? Is it much cheaper than what you would pay back home? Then you got a deal, so be happy.
